A law change

During the creation of this project, I was extremely surprised to learn that GHB, the drug that killed Paddy Bloor, along with at least 285 people in the UK over the last 10 years, was still considered Class C.

This is the group of drugs deemed by the government to be the least harmful. They carry the weakest penalties for buying, possessing and supplying, and yet, people who’s lives have been affected by GHB have been campaigning for this to change for years.

Finally, on November 20, 2020, the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs called for GHB to be reclassified to become a Class B drug.

This day was a landmark for families who’s lives have been turned upside down by the killer drug, but there is still more work to be done.

Many people, such as Dr Graham Bloor, think that GHB should actually be Class A, the most severe group, considering just how harmful the drug can be.

He said “It’s a great first step, and one we have been waiting for for a while. But it beggars belief as to why it isn’t Class A already.”
